Jeffrey Katzenberg, longtime Hollywood producer and founder of the new, unusual streaming platform Quibi, was never shy about grandiose words. Nor was he reticent about his latest project. He explained it to Inc.: "We're not saving lives, but if we're successful, we'll make people's lives better." Here you'll learn all the important info about Quibi, the new streaming service.

Quibi started on April 6th. The title refers to a shortened form of "Quick Bites", which means short series episodes and reality TV formats with running times that usually last about 10 minutes.

Behind and in front of the camera, big names are often to be found: blockbuster directors and Oscar winners such as Steven Spielberg and Guillermo del Toro produce content for the platform. Famous faces like supermodel Chrissy Teigen, comedian Kevin Hart, and actors Reese Witherspoon, Bill Murray, Idris Elba, Will Smith, Laura Dern, Naomi Watts and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson are all new users to be attracted.

Furthermore, Quibi can also look forward to partnerships with Google and T-Mobile. All of these deals have already been under seal before the streaming service even started.

Jeffrey Katzenberg built contacts for such an endeavor over a long period of time. He is, after all, an acclaimed entrepreneur in Hollywood. He laid the groundwork for success as Disney-Studiochef in the 1980s. This studio today is one of the most successful entertainment businesses in the world.

When he founded DreamWorks Studios in 1994 with Steven Spielberg and music and film producer David Geffen, he built the studio's animation department, later selling it to Comcast for 3.8 billion dollars. In 50 years in the entertainment business, Katzenberg produced:

In preparation for their April 2020 launch, the two collected a capital of 1.78 billion dollars. This is an immense amount of trust.

A few series from streaming services come to mind. These include the sitcom "Reno 911", a reboot of "Auf der Flucht" and an adaptation of the high school football film "Varsity Blues". The series "The Most Dangerous Game," in which a cancer-stricken young man is hunted by millionaires, is based on a short story that has been twice filmed.

Sophie Turner is fighting for her life in "Survive" after a plane crash. Steven Spielberg is directing a horror film which will be shown only after dark.

The implication is that the entire series' runtime will be about the runtime of a normal movie. The interesting concept of having a 10-minute break in between episodes is interesting. Whether it can truly provide a sustainable series experience in which viewers feel invested with their favorite characters and stay engaged, or even laugh and enjoy themselves, is questionable.

The fear of missing something important that's being shown in a different way pops up, too. On top of that, notifications from messengers and other apps can distract you if you don't stop using them.

Impressive is that there is no pause and no buffering or a visible deterioration in picture quality when you switch between the two formats. This means that the streaming service consumes a greater data amount - say, up to 20% more.

There are ways to counteract it: You can set a data-saving mode on streaming quality. You can also see the episodes offline and save your mobile data usage less. Quibi offers you episodes in a Full HD resolution. Right now, you can't extract anything more from the app.

There is no way to create additional profiles for an account. You cannot share your account and view Quibi content on multiple mobile devices allegedly in order to create an individual user experience for your smartphone.

So it seems Quibi is aware that at least the strict phone-only policy Restricts visionary experiences. Users want to have the choice between different devices, especially compared to other streaming services. This company has probably set itself up for self-destruction with this unique distinguishing feature first.

Speaking to CNBC, CEO Meg Whitman now understands that a TV option will be possible much sooner than originally planned due to Covid-19.

This adaptation adaptation may be successful enough to justify the costs. In the first 24 hours, 300,000 people downloaded the app. This is respectable, but also discouraging. The company remains far behind the 4 million downloads of Disney+  app by Disney, which is not particularly surprising for a known brand like Disney.

Quibi offers you a generous test period: 90 days you can use Quibi for free to try out the different series and shows, to see if you like them and decide if you want to subscribe or not. This applies to German users as well. There was no official launch for Quibi Germany, but the content is available also for European countries.

After the generous test period, US users can choose between a version with advertising for $4.99 per month, or an option without advertising for $7.99 per month.

Users from Germany need to always sign up for an advertising-free subscription for 8.99 euros. Simply open the Quibi app, input your email address and password, and let the app ask you only about your gender. After that, you're ready to go!

The cost of Quibi services are comparatively high for a platform, which one can use only on a smartphone until now. Despite restrained industry and user reactions, Katzenberg remains optimistic. He is convinced that the quality of the content will lure new users.

In an interview with the business podcast "The Business" Katzenberg explained: "We will be measured not by our successes months and years later, but right away and in a short amount of time. I've never been in a situation where I've failed with great content."
